Guest article: The daily choices you make can determine your health and happiness. Indulging a little too much, skipping medical appointments, and relaxing on the couch might feel like the best antidote for a busy lifestyle, but your actions may put you at risk of serious health issues.
Edible bamboo shoots, zhú sǔn (竹笋) or simply sǔn (笋), fall into two broad categories: winter and spring shoots. Spring shoots are larger and a bit tougher than winter shoots.
Research at several American universities is documenting the longevity-promoting effects of pterostilobene [tero still bin] similar to resveratrol. It reduces cholesterol, triglycerides, high blood sugar reducing hypertension and diabetes.
Something big and positive is happening in India. Women around the world are speaking their minds, demanding rights and respect. The medical profession needs to listen, especially to those who mistrust medical norms. Here is my first of my columns at Economic Times World Health.
I have turned around the flu, brought fever down from 101 to 98 in 3 days using Chinese herbs that improve breathing and energy, kill germs, clear lung phlegm and are safe, non-addictive, non-chemical, vegetarian and available online and in Chinese herb shops.
I am writing a new book on natural approaches to heart health, while discovering surprising foods like chia seeds and jelly fish good sources of Omega3 oil, herbs such as Chinese danshen for regulating heart rhythm, and pleasant treatments ranging from relaxing lemon foot soaks and cooling oil massage to ease hypertension to a few ancient remedies such leech therapy which is again being used as a detoxifying blood thinner. Natural heart health is a huge topic with important research done by alternative cardiologists and hard-hitting advice for everyone who wants to avoid drug side-effects and surgery. I will keep you updated on my progress.
Not only do the foods we eat affect our health, but so can the herbs and spices we use to enhance their flavors. In addition to following a Pan-Asian Mediterranean (“PAM”) diet, I highly recommend adding the following medicinal herbs and spices to your culinary bag of tricks.
Leech saliva is a natural blood thinner and pain killer used to dissolve plaque buildup in major blood vessels near the heart. IT is used during open heart surgery and to speed healing for surgery when replacing severed limbs. It can be used for shrinking varicose veins, reducing arthritis pain and migraines. Leech therapy is gaining some popularity among the alternative healing community. Andrew Plucinski, H.H.P., is interviewed by Letha Hadady, D.Ac. Instead of a fattening sugary desert try this: dark semi-sweet chocolate and a fine red wine. IT is good for your heart. While chocolate helps relax blood vessels and release “feel good” chemicals in the brain, red wine contains resveratrol and quercetin, polyphenols which support cardiovascular health. Enjoyed together, and in moderation, red wine and chocolate can make any meal seem extra special, especially one that is made with love.
Eating a soft, juicy, bright-colored persimmon, letting the soothing flavor and smooth texture slide down your throat to sweeten the center of your being almost makes winter bearable. Some people, holding a persimmon, wolf it down in gulps. I prefer cutting it daintily with knife and fork. Either way, the health benefits of persimmon outweigh the heart-protecting nutrients of an apple. A persimmon “has more dietary fiber, minerals and phenolic compounds – all instrumental in fighting atherosclerosis, a leading cause of heart disease, heart attacks and stroke.”
