There’s an old Chinese proverb that goes something like – when the Emperor is just and his reign in- keeping with Heaven, the lands and people will prosper. But when the Emperor ignores the laws of Heaven there will be famine, floods, fires, wars and plagues. It gives us pause. I have been thinking about foods and herbs for smoke inhalation. They include moistening, nerve-soothing, and rejuvenating remedies for our friends in California.
Foods that moisten mouth, throat and lungs:
Cooked oatmeal served with milk
Lots of cooked oats because they are full of minerals and water
Asparagus
Soups
Soft grains like wheat, quinoa
Fresh and steamed greens and other vegetables–most contain water and mineral
Sprouts – soak organic seeds in water in a jar overnight. Choose a cool dark place to keep them. Then rinse them several times daily until they sprout.
Healing Moistening Herbs:
*White Chinese fungus cooked in soups, oatmeal or with pasta (Tremella) moistens the lungs. Soak the white fungus in water for 20 min. Cut it into pieces and simmer in water.
*East Indian Shilajet capsules taken between meals- reduces stress, rejuvenates internal organs, improves internal moisture and eases sleep
Drinking lots of water does not necessarily help because you get rid of it quickly in urine. The body has to be encouraged to hold its moisture in the lungs by using the above foods and herbs. Some cough remedies will also help such as loquat syrup-sweet enough for kids to enjoy. Avoid all cough remedies that suppress cough- Who needs a sedative when it is already hard to breathe!
Avoid hot spices, salty foods, and irritants–including grumpy people.
All our best wishes and prayers are with you.

Are these the same remedies that you would offer someone who has recently ceased smoking? My brother just quit with the help of Chantix (2 weeks ago). Anything you can offer is appreciated. Very best, Gina
Hi Gina
That’s a good question! Certainly moistening, rejuvenating herbs will be helpful for anyone who wants to quit or who has quit smoking. They help to recondition the lungs and improve breathing and complexion.
In addition, since smoking is an addiction we have to treat the source of the problem.
If he smoked as a nervous habit – a remedy for nervousness would be useful. For example, homeopathic gelsemium.
If he was sad or short of breath and wheezing when he smoked – then a remedy that improves mood and breathing such as homeopathic pulsatilla would be useful.
I write a lot about such natural remedies for emotions in my books because you cannot separate mind and body. If he needs to detoxify the body and normalize weight I suggest he look into Feed Your Tiger. If beauty is an issue or interest than he may enjoy Healthy Beauty because that book contains a great deal of useful information for men and women. For example the homeopathic remedies I mentioned but also chapters dealing with complexion, bad breath, voice etc.
all best, Letha
Thanks Letha, I passed the information along to him. I just purchased Feed Your Tiger, after loving Asian Health Secrets for the last 7 or 8 years now -it’s like a bible to me! We’re both interested in your Healthy Beauty book, since I found the information in AHS great for clearing and brightening my skin, toning my bowels and giving me better breath!
The weight loss sections proved a huge success. I was asked lots of questions as to how I did it, to which I slyly replied “I drink a lot of green tea!” Believe me there was a lot more to it. I was so happy to learn of “Feed Your Tiger” and know it’s going to provide more insight on healthy eating.
I’m thrilled to have found your site and look forward to getting continual information and advice on the latest topics.
As I read through Feed Your Tiger, I’m sure I’ll have questions and look forward to posting!
Very best, Gina
Gee Thanks, Gina!
So nice to hear about your happiness in reading my books. I made a copy of your comment for my literary agent. It is so hard to sell good books these days. I need all the help I can get with book reviews!
Thanks again. Letha
I live in Southern California and appreciate your timely advice. Today while we were walking our dogs, we met a neighbor who gave us some alarming news. Her black lab had been suffering from inhaling smoke. When she tried to get him into her vet, she was told the vet was too busy treating dogs suffering from the air quality. Many smaller dogs were put down because they were not recovering.
Years ago, we got the ok from our vet to try any herbs on our dogs, after researching on the net. As the air quality here deteriorated, we went to a local Chinese herb shop, and asked for a remedy. She gave us a ginseng tea with chrysanthemum and goji berries. We drank it ourselves and also offered it to our dogs, cold. They asked for second helpings!
Thank you very much Jean!
Pet owners will really appreciate this. So will anyone who needs those herbs. People who are trapped in smoke or who have chronic head, eye and throat inflammation will benefit from those herbs. Many people get styes or irritated eyes this season.
I would use American ginseng – white ginseng instant tea. It is more moistening and soothing for dry throat than any other ginseng. Chrysanthemum relieves fever, headache and blurry vision. And goji berries is cooling refreshing for eyes and liver.
I think it might be easier to find and use the american ginseng and goji as extracts.
all best, Letha
Letha, I would be honored if you used the review. The books are great! Kind regards, Gina

hey this is a good page. I was just curious if I can use some of it on my own blog? I would obviously link back to it so that my visitors could read the complete post on your site. Please let me know if that’s fine with you. Thank you either way.
