The hip on the right side of the photo was replaced July 12th, five weeks ago. The total hip replacement is made of a titanium metal femur ball and the socket is metal coated with polyurethane a thick plastic to absorb shocks. It looks like I have a Cadillac in my hip swept wings and all. The hip on the left side (actually my right hip) will be replaced next week. I have no pain whatsoever in the operated hip and a 5 inch scar that is nicely disappearing. Notice the rough edge at the ball and socket of the hip on the left side – that is bone on bone with no joint left to cushion my walk.
The Tiger lilies are in bloom!
Ten days following total anterior hip replacement surgery I am doing fine. Here are useful natural Asian treatments for bruising, pain and prevention of blood clots. They are for internal use. Externally you can apply homeopathic arnica ointment to bruises to enhance circulation. My surgeon glued together the incision and applied a silver-coated bandage to help prevent infection. I am now applying a few drops of colloidal silver daily to the wound.

Natural health techniques, including acupuncture, diet, exercise, and methods to achieve emotional balance are of great value following trauma, surgery, and stroke. In the two following short videos I discuss how acupuncture and diet can be used to help prepare for and revive from major surgery. Our blood brings oxygen and healing to every cell and oxygen helps prevent infection. If possible prepare early for surgery. It takes at least 3 months for the body to make new blood cells.
Acupuncture engages the neural pathways and lymph system to help regulate body functions. It can be used to ease muscle tension and pain. But following surgery, stroke, and accidents traditional Chinese acupuncture can also be used to ease anxiety, improve digestion, and facilitate breathing and circulation. In this video you see Vermont acupuncturist Glynn Pellagrino give me acupuncture in Mt. Ascutney Hospital Rehab Center to help overcome the sedating effects of total hip replacement surgery, including shortness of breath, constipation, low vitality and a feeling of being cut in two.
Blood clot, bleeding, infection –how to avoid them.
Today the day before surgery I have sent my friends and family lavender, the flower that soothes and strengthens the heart. Sharing this time with loved ones is part of the healing process.
Hip replacement surgery has improved over the years due to improved techniques and equipment and the watchful eye of excellent surgeons. I had hoped to have both hips replaced at the same time as had been done up for last year. But my surgeon at Dartmouth Hitchcock said he found that approach caused too much bleeding. So he changed his approach and does only one hip at a time. Here is how the surgery itself has changed over the years.
