Because our planet has increasing environmental pollution, we need SuperFoods to protect longevity. The Goji Berry has been cited as “quite possibly the most nutritionally dense food on earth.” It has been praised and used in Asian medicine for centuries as a healing plant that exhibits amazing properties. Traditionally regarded as a longevity, strength building, and sexual potency food, in studies with elderly people, the Goji Berry, given once per day for three weeks, was reported to increase spirit, optimism, appetite, sleep, and recovery of some sexual function. Given to patients undergoing chemotherapy, the berries where shown to provide significant protection for the liver. A Japanese study suggested that tumor growth “was inhibited by 58% among patients eating Goji Berry compared to a control group.” There are over 40 different varieties of the Goji Berry found throughout the world. With such diversity the potency of the berry can vary greatly. They grow in America in all zones from the Canadian border to mid-Florida in poor or rich soil and a growing season of over 100 days. However, the Himalayan or Tibetan berry is noted for purity and grown wild in ancient soils free of pollutants or pesticides.
Today is Larch Hanson’s 65th birthday. He has worked 40 years harvesting and sharing the living, breathing health from the sea. I learned about Larch and his website www.theseaweedman.com while writing Feed Your Tiger because sea vegetables provide rich, highly valuable nutrients that help maintain a strong alkaline body, excellent blood quality, and a healthy weight. His words and photos are inspiring. Thank you, Larch!
My friend California acupuncturist Michel Czehatowski has just returned from China where he, his daughter Hannah and friend Mark visited great places, among them Chengdu and Emei Shan’s sacred temples, and collected ling zhi “immortality mushrooms.” He has started a wonderfully entertaining blog with photos click here. I also treasure my memories from the 1980s of a rainy weekend spent on Emei mountain, visiting Buddhist temples and spending the night in a guest house near a peaceful moonlit lake.
