You can chart the progress of the “swine flu” here at google maps.
Swine Flu as of Monday April 27, 2009
Pigs were the mixing bowl for this virus. Birds can’t pass bird flu to people. But pigs are uniquely susceptible to getting flu viruses that infect birds. Experts have long worried that a pig would catch a bird strain of the flu and then the virus would mutate inside the pig to a form that could also infect other mammals. That may be what happened in this case. Pigs can also be infected with more than one influenza virus at a time, allowing the viruses to share genes, called “genetic reassortment,” creating new and potentially much more virulent viruses. You can do a lot more than wash your hands to prevent the flu!
First recognize that the flu is not a cold. A cold can come on gradually after a tough work weak, after a long walk in rainy cold weather or a big argument–all of which weaken immunity. Flu symptoms–fever, cough, difficulty breathing–come on suddenly and violently. They require swift anti-inflammatory antiviral protection.
With a cold you may feel weak, chilled, and have a sore throat or stuffed sinus and body aches. Usually staying in bed, drinking lots of warm tea with ginger and lemon and clearing sinus congestion with essential tea tree oil works well. Swab out your nose with a Q tip dipped into Australian tea tree oil to clear your head. The ginger eases sore throat and brings on sweating. That is important. If you don’t sweat out chills, you will continue to feel weak.
For sore throat and swollen neck glands at the first sign of a cold I usually take 3 pills of a Chinese antimicrobial herbal combination: Chuan Xin Lian. The ingredients are dandelion, isatis (Chinese: 板藍根; pinyin: bǎn lán gēn) an antimicrobial used by Chinese herbalists for mumps and sore throat, and andrographis used in China, Scandinavia for colds.. The combination can be taken by adults 3 pills or a smaller dose by children (1 pill) with warm water up to three times daily. Usually one dose at bedtime works for me.
Along with the Chuan Xin Lian, I take 4 – 5 pills of Ganmaoling tablets. They contain holly and vitex, to enhance circulation and ease chest congestion, evodia and chrysanthemum flowers for fever or headache symptoms, and honeysuckle flower (Lonicera japonica) a broad-spectrum antibiotic herb useful for severe pneumonia and SARS.
Chuan Xin Lian and Ganmaoling can be taken in larger doses for curbing fever discomforts of flu. It is important not to suppress natural immunity with sedative drugs and cold raw foods. You need to sweat out aches and kill germs with antibiotic herbs. Many bitter herbs, such as dandelion, isatis, oil of oregano capsules, and others are simultaneously antibiotic for bacterial infections (sore throat and red, raw tonsils) and antiviral for flu. If you use antibiotics herbal or otherwise for more than a couple of days, add acidophilus before meals 1 – 3 times daily. Stay warm. Stay inside, eat lightly, and give yourself a forced vacation!
If you are a frequent traveler take along Flu Away instant beverage. Use it during the flight and, if possible, wear a face mask. Spray your face, hands, and the inside of the mask with pure essential lavender oil spray – another pleasant antiseptic herb. To prevent symptoms add one packet of herbs to a cup of hot water as a tea or to juice. To treat germs, add 2 or 3 packs to a glass of juice once or twice daily. Flu Away is made from finely powdered antibiotic herbs to ease sore throat, fever, and aches. Add the powdered herbs to juice for kids. The formula is made in a Chinese hospital so it is not kid stuff but serious flu medicine in a practical, easy to use form. Flu Away contains honeysuckle, schizonepeta, ligusticum, burdock, forsythia, peppermint, vitex, licorice. Scizonepeta combined with mint induces sweating, as the Chinese say, “To clear the surface” which means to bring out or clear an excess condition that should not be there . . . in this case cold chills. Forsythia bark and burdock reduce fever and reduce toxins, and ligusticum and vitex enhance circulation.
You can find Flu Away and other Yin/Yang Sisters instant beverages such as Breathe Free at Lin Sisters Herb Shop in Chinatown. They are located at 4 Bowery Street (phone: 212 962 5471) and at 18 A Elizabeth Street (phone: 212 962-8083.

Hi Letha!
I have two children (one that is almost 3 and one that is almost 6); does the 1 pill does apply to them as well? Can you mix the pill with food or drink, they’re not able to swallow pills yet.
Thanks!
J.G.
Remember for kids the yin/yang sisters instant beverages. They are easier to use. Add them to juice and use one packet for kids under age 12 daily. If it helps and then wears off you can give 2 daily between meals for kids over age 5. But include lots of water or juice to hydrate them.
The yin/yang sisters teas include:
*Flu Away for fever, cough, sore throat and other flu symptoms
*Breathe Free for stuffy sinus congestion
*Adapto-gin for poor immunity and recurrent colds and asthma
You can see these and order them from http://www.eastearthtrade.com or from Lin Sisters in Chinatown NYC 212 962 5417
Interesting and useful info – thanks for informing everyone. Matt
Hi Letha
Can I still take this if I am pregnant? I am 36 weeks pregnant and really worried about this Flu?
thanks
You can take flu medicines as long as they do not cause diarrhea. Start with the smaller recommended dose.
1 – 2 pills or 1 packet of powdered herbs.
Hi, Letha…thanks for posting this. I’ve recently developed flu-like symptoms during the last 7 – 10 days in my moon cycle before I actually start bleeding. This started about 6 months ago. About 5 days after ovulating, I start running fevers at night. This gradually progresses to body aches, headaches and extreme oversensitivity: to light, smells, loud sounds, touch, etc.
I tried Free and Easy Wanderer Plus but didn’t notice an improvement. Do you think your suggestions here might help? Or do you have any other ideas? I have an intuitive hit my adrenals are weakened at this time, but my appetite is very, very high – strange. I am 47 and in good health overall, physically active, living in Santa Fe, NM. I’ve recently started eating meat and poultry again after years of fish/vegetarian only. Thank you so much.
Hi Cindy
I am always happy to hear from NM, where I lived from age 6 – 21.
I suspect that your discomforts because they come during typical PMS time, may be hormone related not germ related.
Night sweats, fevers, body aches, headaches and oversensitivity may be due to nervous conditions aggravated by
blood deficiency and menopausal changes. As estrogen rises and falls, a number of discomforts appear. I would not add antibiotic herbs to balance them. More likely you need herbs and diet to help regulate hormones. Perhaps Three Immortals pills from Health Concerns, recommended for night sweats, headaches, irritability, vertigo, insomnia, constipation, graying hair and lowered sex drive from approaching menopause. If your have bloating, breast swelling severe headaches Woman’s Balance by Health Concerns is recommended.
I agree that oversensitivity to light and sound could be adrenal related (hyperadrenal). But it may also be related to yeast.
Add acidophilus to your diet. If you have cramps, vaginal discharge or other yeast symptoms, you might also insert a capsule of acidophilus as an anal suppository once a week to stop yeast symptoms in the lower body. Try to avoid caffeine, which increases inflammatory symptoms. And let me know if the suggestions help.
Flu is sudden and dramatic –high fever, cough, difficulty breathing. It does not happen monthly.
all best, warm regards, L.
Thank you Letha
Thank you very, very much, Letha. I’ll give your suggestions a go…Years ago, I had a copy of Asian Health Secrets and adored it. When I moved out to NM, I left it behind with a friend. Today I’ve ordered it again…too valuable not to have on hand! I’ll say hey to Albuquerque for ya!
hi letha sorry dont no were to post this can you use gan mao ching for tooth infections…thanks
Hi Blake
Gan Mao Ching is best used for swollen glands, fever, flu, and head inflammation. It may be too general for tooth infections. The dentist may have to go some cleaning work to remove infection deep near the roots or some other complication. Best to know what is necessary from Xrays.
