Our bones, ligaments and joints support us and allow us to walk, dance, lift objects, wave at friends, and sit without falling over. Aging, illness, poor habits and injury impair mobility and threaten health. Fortunately there are herbs, supplements, foods and wonderfully easy yet powerful qigong exercises that can protect and/or repair bones, ligaments and joints. Anyone can regain freedom of movement. Join me and my friend, Sharon Smith, a highly skilled and internationally respected Qigong Master for an evening lecture Friday, October 23rd beginning at 7PM at the New York Open Center’s new location 22 E. 30th Street. Call 212 219 2527 or click here to register.

We will discover natural, non-allergenic sources of calcium and minerals; cutting-edge treatments to increase cartilage; supplements for enhancing bone density; herbs that reduce chronic pain and stiffness; rejuvenating and relaxing qigong practices and meditations that gently but powerfully increase muscle strength and bone density; and much more. This workshop is of special interest to athletes, runners, dancers, women and anyone with arthritis or osteoporosis, but all of us should know how to keep our bones strong throughout our lives.

    Dear Letha,
I work at Registration at the Open Center and went on one of your walking tours of Chinatown last November (it rained) with my Indian boyfriend. Unfortunately, we have concert tickets for Friday evening and I won’t be able to attend your talk at NY Open Center. I am hoping you will repeat this talk again soon.

However,I’ve been having major difficulties with my knees for the past several years. My ligaments are loose don’t properly hold my knee in proper alignment. I’ve been doing Pilates to develop the surrounding muscles and am taking an herbal anti-inflammatory (tulsi, curcumin, rosemary) to help control the pain. I am also trying to take off weight as this will help.

What else can I do? Anything you can suggest will be helpful.
    Thank you.

    Thank you Mariam
We will miss you this evening. Thinking of you and other who cannot attend, I have posted my class notes. They will help.
Loose ligaments is a major problem for those of us – formerly fit dancers, yoga practitioners, athletes, and others. MDs give
injections of irritants into joint areas to make ligaments tighter so that they hold muscles in place better. My approach is ashwagandha for muscles strength. If your ligament are particularly weak, reduce your intake of tumeric, which makes ligaments and movement more not less flexible. Ashwagandha is not meant for weight loss, but feeling stronger, you will be more tempted to exercise. For weight loss please see my book Feed Your Tiger.

    Hi Letha,

Thanks so much for all you do — I always find exactly what I am looking for when I visit your blog!!! Wondering if you’ve heard of Acid/Alkaline balance and how it helps reduce bone loss? Basically, it’s a low glycemic, high-vegetable diet. Would love to know your thoughts. Here’s an article discussing more about what it is… The importance of pH balance in healthy bones

    Hi Jacqueline

I am sure an alkaline diet works best for cleansing — a major issue for most of us who need to reduce acids, fat, wastes so that we can better absorb calcium and essential nutrients to nourish bones and build muscle. One of my favorite nutritionists Dr. Bernard Jensen recommended cleansing diets, high in fiber and green foods, for most health issues including arthritis and osteoporosis. Thanks for your comment and useful link.
