RxLIST Internet Drug Index: Incorrectly labeled products and/or the presence of contaminants, adulterations, or substitutions have all been reported in conjunction with certain Chinese medicinal formulas. Contaminants such as heavy metals and/or substitutions with pharmaceutical drugs (over the counter and prescription) are a health hazard. The American Association of Oriental Medicine (AAOM) has published a list of manufactures and medicinal formulas that have been reported with adulterations and/or contaminants. The AAOM states that this list is not all-inclusive. Just because it is not on the list does not necessarily mean it is safe. Consultation with a Chinese medical practitioner is advised before purchasing any Chinese medicinal formula. The AAOM is requesting it’s medical practitioners to require spectrographic proof of purity from the manufacturers before prescribing a specific patent medicine. Another option: Choose Chinese herbal products safely manufactured in the USA.
